About KTY

Kolkata Trekkers Youth an organisation for mountaineering, trekking and adventure lovers was born on 4th Februrary, 1985 (21 Magh,1391).It was started with members from the E.Rly.Bharat Scouts & Guides and other interested youths. They first met for the inception of the club under the Pagoda in Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

We are the 64th registered mountaineering club under the W.B.Govt.Here is the story of our birth. The first idea of a club like our own came from Sukhendu Mukherjee who was lost in the 1984 'Kamet Expedition' organised by Parvat Abhijatri Sangha under the ABP group. He was the SM of Budge Budge station and the scout master of the BS&G group there. In 1983 he led a team of scouters and rovers for a trek to Sandakphu.Due to some technical difficulties faced it was decided that outside the railways we need to form a seperate mountaineering club.As quickly as it was thought, because of the earnest eagerness of the members the formation of the club was completed in quick time. They made a memorandum of the rules and regulations and the purpose of our club and submitted the application to the W.B.Govt.for registration as a mountianeering club. The following were the members of the 1st Governing Body were President-Nadia Ranjan Bose,Vice-President-Ashim Kumar Ghosh Chowdhury, Secretary-Shibaprosad Das, Treasurer-Sujay Kumar Dutta, Quarter-Master-Robindra Nath Chowdhury, Members-Atin Ghosh Chowdhury, Mrinal Kanti Dutta, Bijay Kumar Sanyal and Ravi Kumar Srivastav.

Our first President Sri Nadia Ranjan Bose lovingly named our club "Trekkers Youth".In the meantime on our own we organised a trek to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia with 6 members. Here also we discussed about the future activities of our club.We could not have gone ahead in our endevour without the help of Kalyan Chakraborty(Giri-Doot), Prodyut Kumar Chattopadhaya and Sankar Prosad Biswas(Jagada)(Parvat Abhijatri Sangha), Biswapati Pramanik and Nishit Kumar Chakraborty(Himarohi), Sanatan Bhattacharjee, Ranjit Rit & Dilip Kr. Bhattacharjee(Climbers Group) and personally Sambhunath Das, Ashrumoy Guha Thakuratha, Subhash Kantha Roy, Kankan Kumar Roy, Kamal Kumar Guha, Amulya Sen, Kalyan Bhattacharjee, Dr.Tridib Kumar Basu, Ratan Lal Biswas, Robindra Nath Chattrejee and Ajit Kumar Biswas. Meanwhile Ashim Kumar Ghosh Chowdhury designed our club logo. Just before the official inception we faced two setbacks:-1) The govt.registration office informed us that we will have to register as Calcutta Trekkers Youth instead of Trekkers Youth. 2)On 19th September, 1984 in the Kamet expedition Sukhendhu Mukherjee fell in a hidden crevasse never to return again. Such a huge blow at an early stage almost winded us.A large number of senior mountaineers and trekkers of that time comforted us.We took an oath to make Sukhendhu Mukherjee's dream a success. Even today on 19th Sept we remember him and find renewed vigor and inspiration.

Now there was no looking back.We observed 4th Feb as our official birthday every year. Our registration date was 5th June 1985 (No.S/48635) at the address of 175/2, Manicktala Main Road, P.O.Kankurgachi, Kolkata-700054, our contact address is 243/2B/1, A.P.C. Road, Block - A, Flat - 4D, Kolkata - 700006, West Bengal. In our first year we had 38 members.Out of them only 5 members namely Santi Sekhar Bose, Nadia Ranjan Bose, Ashim Kumar Ghosh Chowdhury, Bijay Kumar Sanyal and Bhaskar Das are still actively associated with the club.As we did not have a club premises we regularly meet on every Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at Sir Gurudas Banerjee Halt station. Renowned mountaineer and scientist (Antarctic Expedition) Sudipta Sengupta unveiled our club flag in a memorable function chaired by Sambhunath Das.

Meanwhile in a Govt of WB Gazette Notification (No.376-Home(Cons.) dt 27.12.2000) proposed that Calcutta be renamed Kolkata.Govt.of India in a Notification Memo No.11/22/99-M&G, New Delhi dt.11th Jan, 2001 accepted the proposal.

This caused us a great deal of administrative difficulty thus we decided to apply for a change in name.We held a special AGM on 14th July 2003 at E.Rly. BS&G, Narikeldanga Group's scout den. The minutes of this AGM was submitted to the Society Registration Office.

Finally in a letter of the Society Registration Office (No-S/220 dt.8th Aug, 2003) on 29th July 2003 officially our club changed it name for the second time to 'Kolkata TrekkersYouth'.

Earlier on 4th July, 2003 in a ceremony at Jibanananda Sabhaghar our new named club flag and banner were unveiled by Dipali Sinha and Subhash Kantha Roy.

We organised our first official trek to Muktinath in Nepal Himalaya (6th Dec, 1985). We also started getting our members trained in basic and advance mountaineering. We also started to procure equipments for our own expeditions and RCC. In 1986 with the help of Climbers Group, Sreerampur we organised our 1st RCC with18 male trainees including 2 physically handicapped members and 5 female trainees. In 1987 Prodyut Kr. Chattaapadhyay led our 1st expedition to Kedardome (6831mtrs./22,410fts) which was a success. We never looked back. Our 29th RCC was successfully concluded recently.

We also held mountaineering expeditions to Golap Kangri & Parcha Kangri, Kalanag (twice), Karcha, Un-named peak in Lossar (twice), Sesar Rang, Kangla Tarbo, Shiva, Hathi, CB-13, Deo Tibba, Jogin-II, M-4 (Mulkilla), CB-44, Hanuman Tibba,Yunam, Chamser Kangri & Lungser Kangri, Gangstang, Fluted, Rubal Kang, Shigri Parbat, M-1 & M-10, Mirang & Koa Rang-II. We also rergularly organise high altitude treks. Our club has also done costal treks, desert treks, cycling, river side treks, jungle treks, outings etc.

We also organised Sundarban exploration camps which was well appreciated among the adventure lovers.

Our own publication Kamet is well appriciated among our peers. It was published yearly from 1985 but now it is a once in two year issue (due to financial reasons).

In 2002 July we published our first issue of newsletter Pinnacle. This is also a once in two year issue.

Our club also has in its possession a respectable number of adventure related books, maps and journals.

We started an adventure programme with the places whose name start with the letter 'B'.It's lovingly called 'BAT'. Our 1st BAT was held in 1992 with 92 campers in Buxaduar. We held our 9th BAT in 2000 in Barmul. Two of our memorable programmes are:-1)Two man cycling from Gomukh to Gangasagar in 63 days and 2)All ladies himalayan trek..

In sport climbing our male and female participants have achived laurels in state, zonal and national level.

With the association of ITC we have organised survival camps for their staff and their wards.

We also take part in different social activities, mountaineering meets, seminars, symposium etc.
